Underwear Becomes Eveningwear At Fendi's Spring/Summer 2023 Haute Couture Show
The collection by Kim Jones was whimsically undone.
Fendi’s latest haute couture show was a dream. The event took place in an ovular room illuminated by a light of changing color that defined the catwalk. Looks featuring exposed bralettes layered beneath strapless gowns contributed to the whimsically undone quality of the collection. Pieces merged elements of lingerie with eveningwear to varying degrees, creating something entirely of its own.
If there is an “it” color of the season so far, it would be metallic silver, which was a prominent theme throughout the collection. Chain mail gloves gently slouching from wrist to elbow complemented silver dresses of straight and soft V necklines, one of which incorporated a similar metal fabrication. Use of the heavy material juxtaposed fluid fabrics and romantic cold shoulder sleeves that extended towards the ankles.
Delicate floral appliqués and lace details in muted pastels were offset by asymmetrical drop and hoop earrings of dramatic proportions. Some models wore earrings of markedly larger sizes on the left than right, while others wore the accessory solo. This asymmetry, also reflected in hanging drapery overlays and intricate ruching, was a modern iteration of otherwise classical silhouettes.
The footwear could best be described as ballet meets mary jane. A subdued color palette of rounded toes with crossing straps and translucent accents continued throughout the collection. Handbags in slightly rectangular, circular, and cylindrical silhouettes featured loops of woven metallic chording attached to the top.
