Balenciaga Takes on 'The Simpsons' for Spring/Summer 2022
Balenciaga's latest collection arrives in the form of a staged red carpet and a special episode of The Simpsons.
Oh, to be inside the mind of Demna Gvasalia. While the Balenciaga Creative Director has never shied away from the unexpected, his latest collection for the brand reaffirms his dedication to the boundaries of what's fashionable.
For the brand's Spring/Summer 2022 collection, the designer introduced a series of new creations with a staged red carpet premiere. However, that doesn't mean there wasn't a runway. In a major tonal shift, the show moved from a red carpet to the animated world of The Simpsons.
After Homer forgets his wife Marge's birthday, he reaches out to Balenciaga asking them to send something in time to give her a present. Touched by the email, a Simpson-ated Gvasalia sends a dress. Marge revels in the glory of the gown for half an hour before sending it back, thanking the brand for "the best 30 minutes of [her] life." Overwhelmed Gvasalia decides that this is just the type of woman he is trying to reach with his clothing. With his team, he heads to Springfield and invites the Simpsons and all their friends to return to Paris with him and model his next collection.
Whether Gvasalia is trying to say that his clothing is accessible to the average housewife of Middle American or that he intends to bring them into the fold of luxury fashion is debatable. Judging by his price tags, the former seems highly unlikely and the latter a fruitless battle. But if there's anyone that could, Gvasalia is surely the man for the job.
